We have an exciting opportunity for a Mid-Level Marine Scientist in our Hunt Valley, MD office.

What you will do:   You will be integrated into an existing team of marine scientists currently pursuing and executing a wide range of multidisciplinary projects and programs for a variety of federal, state, and commercial clients. These projects may include sediment coring and sampling, topographic and bathymetric surveys, marine geophysical and remote sensing surveys, as well as underwater cultural resource, ecotoxicological benthic community, fisheries, and water quality assessments. Specifically, you will:

  • Develop study plans, field reports, technical memoranda, as well as other internal and public-facing documents. These work products will be related to CERCLA, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), environmental permitting, and compliance projects.
  • Plan and perform vessel-based survey and sampling operations aboard EA boats and other craft.
  • Assume a lead role in sampling design and survey efforts, followed by the performance of broad ranging data assessment, analysis, and reporting activities.

What you will need:

  • M.S. degree Marine Science (biology, ecology, chemistry, or geology focus), oceanography, or related discipline, as well as 5 years of work experience outside an-academic setting. Applications submitted by candidates offering a B.S. degree with 7 years of work experience in Marine Science, geophysics, hydrographic surveying, environmental monitoring, marine drilling operations, marine construction, or related field will also be considered.
  • Experience conducting work aboard small craft and large vessels in the open, near coastal, or protected waters of the North Atlantic, Great Lakes, or Gulf of Mexico.
  • Strong understanding of ecology, geology, and coastal processes of marine, estuarine and aquatic environments.
  • Familiarity and/or formal training in working within industrialized settings including the use of hydraulic winching systems, cranes, large-scale oceanographic moorings, and ground tackle.
  • Proven ability to lead field teams of scientists on marine/aquatic projects including oceanographic, sediment and water quality studies, as well as fishery and macrobenthos assessments.
  • Direct project experience and/or strong understanding of environmental chemistry.
  • Experience performing projects with comprehensive regulatory requirements and interacting with regulatory agencies.
  • Experience performing sediment coring, soil borings, or related subsurface investigations.
  • Experience using GPS/GNSS or topographic survey techniques in support of field studies including real time kinematic (RTK) and virtual reference station (VRS) networks.
  • Experience in the acquisition and analysis of data from the following remote sensors: side scan sonar; sub bottom profilers; magnetometers; echosounders; benthic sleds; acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs), water quality meters and water sampling devices.
  • The credentials (or be able to satisfy the training requirements) associated with OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification, as well as OSHA 30-hour Construction Site Supervisor training.
